VINTAGE HISTORICAL COLLECTIBLE LETTER OF ALABAMA STATE AUDITOR CYRUS D. HOGUE (1847-1892) To Probate Judge Hon. William Riley Adkins (1839-1903) in Double Springs, Winston County Alabama concerning a description for a land matter of property of landowner E. W. Miller in Winston County---on the letterhead of the Revenue Department of the State of Alabama, Cyrus D. Hogue, Auditor (he held this office from 1888-1892, his death) the letter is datelined March 30, 1892. Judge Adkins wrote a note to Mr. Miller on the bottom and back of the letter seeking additional information on the transaction. (These old letters reveal a lot of additional information--Judge Adkins came to Double Springs, bought one of the first lots sold in the new town and moved his newspaper, The Winston Herald, to Double Springs in 1883. He turned the paper over to his son George and became Probate Judge. The newspaper was sold to the Haleyville Advertiser in 1945. Judge Adkins served with the Confederate States Army 24th Alabama, Co. I. --State Auditor Hogue wrote this letter March 30 1892 and died June 4 1892.
