Millions of Dylan & The Band fans requested tour tickets via US POSTAL MAIL, the ONLY ACCESS TO TICKETS and the only way to purchase them!!!
Graham phoned the post offices after an estimated 1½ to 2 million envelopes were received before he phoned the post offices requesting they mark the remaining letters - "RETURN TO SENDER". In many cities, lines formed outside US Post Offices in order to submit and receive a postmark before the required deadline arrived.
All concerts were immediately sold out, and the first 658,000 applicants received tour tickets. Bill Graham said "

While ticket requests saturated, David Geffin, chairman of Elektra/Asylum Records confirmed that he
signed Dylan away from Columbia Records
in a deal forming Dylan's own label, "
Ashes and Sand Records
", distributed by Elektra/Asylum.
