Description
Letter by a Woman in Kansas City, Missouri During the Civil War. Kansas City, Missouri: 1864. Handwritten letter, 4pp, signed "M L L" dated April 12, 1864 at Kansas City, Missouri. The letter begins with a lengthy description of the writer's ailments, including a tootache, followed by around one page of text describing preparations for the upcoming Sanitary Fair to be held in St. Louis in May to raise funds for the war effort: "It is five weeks since I have been to the front door, but I see from my window the streets are lined with ladies soliciting a large proportion of them for contributions for the Sanitary Fair auxiliary to the St. Louis Fair...If I am well I may attend on the girls account but I shall not contribute as I think there are more laudable objects for charity...There will doubtless be some magnificent articles on exhibition Among others is a painting...valued at 00...indeed the wealthy MIssourians seem to think paintings to the furnishing of a house are what windows are to its comfort." The rest of the letter consists of local gossip and family news. In good condition, creased, a bit foxed, with separations along folds. [8099]
