    Notable Features:
This ring was handmade during the Art Nouveau era. Composed of 14k rose gold, this ring features a beautiful ruby stone in the engagement style. The use of the single beautiful stone in this piece is an excellent example of the styles of jewelry popular during this time period, which saw jewelers turning away from the more elaborate and ornate jewelry designs of the preceding Victorian era and toward sophisticated jewelry inspired by simpler designs and the natural world. The style of the piece suggests it was created as an engagement ring, as colorful center gemstones were popular in engagement rings during this time period, and this ring would be the perfect piece for any bride.
The large ruby stone showcases a lovely vivid deep pink hue. The stone's semi-translucent nature allows for light to filter through its body, illuminating its brilliant hue. The ruby was expertly hand-cleaved into a round faceted cut for lovely sparkle. Resting securely in rose gold prong settings, the bright hue of the ruby contrasts beautifully with the warm rose gold. The setting also raises the ruby over one-third of an inch off the finger when worn, appearing to suspend the ruby in mid-air. The claw prong settings themselves flow downwards, creating a scalloped-like design beneath the stone. These gracefully curving lines would have been popular during the Nouveau period.
The 14k rose gold band of the ring is smooth and polished for comfortable wear. A classic example of jewelry from the Art Nouveau era, this ring would make a valuable addition to any antique jewelry collection, or for any bride searching for "something old." Don't miss your chance to preserve this piece of cultural history.
    Damage:
Age appropriate wear. There are several minor flea-bites present on the stone's face at the edges of the table and at the girdle; however, this does not affect wear and the stone remains secure.

    The History
The Art Nouveau era, 1890-1910, was also called "La Belle Epoque" in French, which translates to "A Beautiful Time.”  This was very true due to the gorgeous designs that came out of this period.  This era focused on women and the beauty of nature and the pieces were often large. Enamel was a common material used in Art Nouveau jewelry as the period was more about the importance of the design over the materials used to create it. The Art Nouveau period happened before the start of the first World War, when mass manufacturing took over the production of many products, including some jewelry.
Rubies are one of the four precious gemstones and are prized for their pink to blood red colors. The most valued hue of ruby is called blood-red, or pigeon blood, for the bright, rich hue it exhibits. The color of a ruby comes from the element chromium. Rubies have adorned royal and religious jewelry for centuries and were especially esteemed in Asian countries like China and India, where they were thought to bring good fortune. Rubies are graded by color, clarity, cut, and carat. Rubies are often also evaluated based on their geographic origin.
