Arts and Crafts Copper Bookends with Oak Tree MotifDescription and Item Information
Up for sale is this pair of antique copper bookends. Please excuse any glare in the photos. The bookends have both planished, acid-etched, and repousse areas, with a stately oak tree on each. They are large bookends, as each bookend is approximately 7 7/8 inches wide, 6 inches tall, and 5 5/8 inches in depth (front to back). Unpacked, they weigh 3 pounds 1.5 ounces. This set would look fantastic in an arts and crafts decor.
Identification
The bookends are unsigned. The exact age is not known, but they are antique. The maker is not known. However, the quality is very good, so it is not unreasonable to think that they could be by Dirk van Erp or one of his assistants such as Harry Dixon. They were acquired in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Condition
The bookends look great overall, with minor wear. The patina is very nice overall, with light wear. Some areas are more reddish, and there are some areas of green (mostly on the backs). The bottoms show more wear, with fine scratches and some small shiny copper spots where the patina has worn from contact with a surface beneath. One bookend has a small mark beneath where there was once a sticker. Please review the description and photos, and ask any necessary questions prior to bidding or buying.
