Description
Important historic letters concerning the Thayer family of Amherst MA.
This lot consists of two original letters by Asahel Thayer concerning the deaths of brothers
Zadock Thayer (in 1814) and Josiah Thayer (in 1837).
Both letters sent from Amherst MA to brother "Charly" (Charles) in Dresden ME.
My research confirms both of these deaths as mentioned.
He also mentions other brothers Sceva, Martin, and Nathan.
Because the handwriting styles are different, it is possible that Asahel dictated one (or both) of the letters
and had another family member do the writing. One is signed "A. Thayer" while the other is signed "Asahel."
Both letters are one page and in VG condition with natural folds.
There are a couple of holes and some minor tears (see photos).
I have photographed full pages of the letter as well as closeup scans of various parts.
I have also uploaded some research materials I discovered.
These are NOT included with the sale of the letter.

1837 Letter
Amherst Sept 29, 1837
Dear Brother Charly,
I have this day ??? the sad intelligence that our Brother Josiah has taken his departure from this troublesome world and is now undoubtedly enjoying that rest which is prepared for all the faithful. Why then should I not call it the joyful, and not the sad intelligence. He has been failing for the last six months and as I leave died of a consumption, he has left his family very well off for their worldly goods. Br. Martin + his family have been in Amherst for two mos past, they leave next week for Philadelphia they are in good health -- You have probably been made acquainted with my failure. I have been (em)ployed by my ??? to finish up the work and am now about through and out of business, and what I am to do for a living I cannot tell. I think I shall not try any business til next spring + whether I shall stay in Amherst or not is yet undecided. My family are in tolerable good health. Our best respects to your family. Your (br) A. Thayer.
