    Picken founded the Woman's Institute of Domestic Arts and Sciences in 1916 in Scranton, PA.
    She was an expert on fashion and a well-known authority on dress, fabric, design and sewing. She taught "Economics of Fashion" at Columbia University and was a founding director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute.
