Georgetown, Vermilion County, Illinois, Feb. 28, 1864,
from Solomon Early to his Mother & Sister. After he signed his name, he wrote the names of his wife and children.
    Written on
    Civil War patriotic stationery,
with a red & blue illustration of an eagle & flag above an elaborate circle of stars, interlocked rings, each named for one of the original 13 Colonies, and with "AMERICAN CONGRESS. WE ARE ONE" in the center. Imprint at top left of "Magee, 316 Chestnut Street, Philada.". A scarce design used.
    The letter includes (spelling corrected):
    "Dear Mother and sister,
I take my pen in hand to write you a few lines to let you know how we are getting along. We are all well at this time and we hope that these few lines may find you all well. We received your letter February the seventeenth and was glad to hear from you. I would be glad when you write to us again to let us know whether you get any letters from Simon or not, and if you do, let us know how he is. We have not had any letter from him for some time.
I am cutting wood for Doctor Haws at present. I get seventy five cts. per cord. James Harvey can chop a cord of wood in a day. He is growing very fast. He is almost as large as myself, and my other two boys are growing very fast and are as mischievous as they can be. Lucinda sends her best respects to you all and she would like to see you all once more...
It rained here yesterday and it is tolerable cool here today....
