Some excerpts:
Did I ever describe Arcata to you[?] I presume you think it would pale beside Bloomfield, which is not so. It has grown considerable since I left three years ago. It is a little gem on Humboldt Bay. It boasts of two churches, three public school, five stores, and to[o] many saloons. Its basis is agricultural and will continue to grow. Yet it will never beat old Sonoma. I have been nearly if not quite the breadth and length of California and Sonoma Co. is still preeminent in my estimation.
Have you never felt as if your aspirations and your habits were at constant warfare. I have so much so as to weary of life. But so it is with us all - up to Heaven in theory and down to Earth in practice.
We are again shut out from the outside world as the late heavy storms have broken our telegraph wires so our daily papers have not much news. The weather has been in a perpetual weeping condition for the last two months.
