Description
Original 1843 stampless letter + cover
written by Union College student Charles Davis of Spencertown NY.
Charles was the son of John and Mary Ann Davis of Spencertown.
The family was well known in the area.
Writing to his mother, Charles is concerned about being able to pay his board for the upcoming school years.
Appears that he is doing some law work and teaching on the side but anticipates passing the bar in the near future. His mother was living in New York City c/o Mr. Sampson.
Charles mentions sister Cornelia and "Benjamin" who has helped him with college costs.
According to Union College records, Charles had to leave school for a time (see images)
but did return to graduate in the Class of 1844.
The letter is 2 pages and in VG condition with natural mailing folds.
Some separation has occurred at the folds.

Spencertown May 19, 1843
Dear Mother,
Since my school is closed I have more leisure time than usual + shall now imploy a few moments in writing to you. I have received a number of papers from you, but on none of them have I seen any directions by which I might send a letter. For this reason and want of time I have delayed writing until the present time. I have been expecting you ?? for some time past but heard by way of Cornelia a few days ago that you would not be here before the 1
st
of June. I was in New York the latter part of April and called at Mr. Sampson’s but found you had gone to Norwalk. I intended to have gone there myself by as I could not raise the money for Benjamin. I thought it was useless to go, and travel. I closed my school about the middle of April and have now commenced the study of law with a determination not to teach again at least till I have finished my studies, which will be about two years. As the money which I have earned by teaching shall be obliged to
(PAGE 2) pay to Benjamin. I shall be under the necessity of trying to get some to assist me to funds sufficient to pay my board. If I can get this assistance I can do law business enough to clothe myself and pursue my studies without interruption at the same time. I think I should be able to return the favor again in the course of two years after being admitted to the bar. My object in stating these facts is to ?? whether I cannot gain such assistance from Mrs Folger or Mrs McComb. My board probably in that time will amount to 0 or 0 dollars which I should not want all at once but small sums at a time as my board bills become due. If you will propose it to them and write me the result should you not return soon it will oblige me much. The mail will soon leave and I am obliged to close.
From your son Chas Davis
