Description
Original letter penned to well known Middletown CT resident and merchant William Southmayd.
Dated Aug 27, 1844 from Edward M. Young of New York.
Young is sending Southmayd .50 to pay for his mother's board and repayment of a loan.
He also is grateful for the attention that his mother received (together with a loan of .00) from Mr. Southmayd during his mother's recent visit to Middletown.    I believe Edward M. Young (1810-1891) to have been a book keeper and banker in Brooklyn for many years.   His Clinton Street address given in the letter was in Brooklyn.
The letter is one page and in VG condition with natural folds.  Partial wax seal is attached.  No stamps.

New York August 27, 1844
Mr William Southmayd
Dear Sir, I have been instructed by my mother, Mrs. Mary Young, to forward to you the enclosed sum of money (.50) which is to be applied as follows -- Five dollars to be retained by your self in payment of the loan to that amount which she obtained of you, a few days since, while on a visit to Middletown. The remainder (.50) to be handed over to Mrs. Nye for board bill due by mother to her.
You will please accept the thanks of our family for the kindness and attention which you bestowed on my mother during her visit to your city. As mother left here unpremeditatedly and without the knowledge of more than one of the family, her absence was the source of much uneasiness to us, and we were gratified to learn that she met with that considerate attention which one advanced in years and laboring under the infirmities usually attendant upon age, so much requires. Please to acknowledge the receipt of this in order to prevent any doubt of is having reached your hand and you will thereby very much oblige.
